BRACEVILLE – State Senator Patrick Joyce announced that the Village of Braceville is set to receive $650,000 in funding through the Community Development Block Grant for Housing Rehabilitation.

“Keeping up with routine maintenance for homes can be unexpected and costly at times,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “These funds will ensure residents will be able to make improvements to their homes to provide a safe place to live.”

Housing rehabilitation grants are designed to assist low-to-moderate income homeowners with improvements to ensure safe and sanitary living conditions. The Community Development Block Grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These state-administered funds are designated exclusively for non-metropolitan communities that do not receive Community Development Block Grant entitlement funding from HUD.

The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is awarding a combined $8.4 million for 13 communities, including Braceville, to invest in 135 housing improvement projects.

“I appreciate Senator Joyce's support of grant programs like these. It's great to have a senator who understands the needs of smaller communities like Braceville,” said Braceville Mayor Dave Wright. “The grant will allow us to help residents in need of home repairs across the village.”

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Patrick Joyce championed a new law that creates an easier process to obtain a hunting, fishing, trapping and sportsmen license.

“For those who hunt, fish or trap, the process of renewing your license every year can be a burden and time-consuming,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “It makes sense to allow a three-year license option for these activities.”

The new law allows Illinois residents to obtain a three-year fishing, hunting, sportsmen’s combination or trapping license at three times the cost of an annual one. Previously, people were required to renew their license for these activities every year.

“The convenience of this new law is one thing, but it’s also improving our state’s conservation,” said Joyce. “I am glad to be a part of this commonsense change that will make the process easier for hunters and fishers across our state.”

House Bill 3677 was signed Friday and takes effect Jan. 1, 2024.

KANKAKEE – Four local libraries in the 40^th Senate District will receive nearly $170,000 in combined grants to grow and enhance their services, thanks to support from State Senator Patrick Joyce.

“Many folks rely on their local libraries, as they provide books, host events and have other essential resources available to the public,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “When we invest in our libraries, we are investing in our community to provide residents with the best possible tools for success and community engagement.”

Four area libraries are set to receive a total of $169,531 to enhance community literacy, improve library services and upgrade current technology to ensure they are providing the best services to their residents.

The following libraries in the 40^th District will receive funds:

• Prairie State College: $74,113
• Kankakee Community College: $68,108
• Bradley Public Library: $15,360
• Bourbonnais Public Library: $11,950

“We are excited to receive a Project Next Generation Grant to expand our youth programming with engineering, coding and robotics activities for middle school students and makerspace activities including 3D and sublimation printing for teens,” said Jodie DePatis, Director of Bradley Public Library. “We appreciate Senator Joyce’s support of library grant programs that allow us to bring much needed resources and educational programs to our community.”

SPRINGFIELD – A comprehensive plan backed by State Senator Patrick Joyce that aims to increase renewable energy procurement and promote environmental conservation was signed into law last Friday.

“By using our existing hydropower infrastructure, we are minimizing the need for additional construction and associated costs,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “Right here in the 40^th District, we have two major hydropower dams that will benefit greatly from this new law.”

The new law aims to support hydropower dams across the state, especially the Kankakee Hydropower Dam and the Wilmington Dam located in Joyce’s district. The law will require the Illinois Power Agency to procure a percentage of its renewable energy credits from hydropower dams. This will help increase the use of this renewable energy source, while also promoting environmental conservation by using dams that already exist.

“The state’s energy goals can be achieved through this measure, while discouraging the construction of new dams by taking away incentives for these projects,” said Joyce. “There’s no need for new dams, when we already have the available resources. This highlights the importance of using our current resources wisely.”

Senate Bill 1474 was signed and takes effect Jan. 1, 2024.
