SPRINGFIELD – To educate homeowners about the importance of home fire sprinkler systems, State Senator Patrick Joyce presented a resolution to the Senate Wednesday.

“Home fire sprinklers are one of the most important safety measures in households,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “These systems can provide peace of mind and protect homes from major fire devastation.”

Senate Resolution 96 declares the week of May 11-17, 2025 as Home Fire Sprinkler Week in Illinois.  The purpose of this resolution is to raise awareness about sprinkler systems and promote education to prevent the damage and risks that house fires cause to families, firefighters and structures.

Civilian structure fires account for over 80% of deaths in homes, and home fires cause $8.7 billion in property damage each year. Today, home fires are deadlier due to unprotected lightweight construction material, open floor plans, synthetic furnishings, emerging technology, and more, causing homes to burn faster. The United States Fire Administration estimates fire sprinklers in homes could save thousands of lives and properties.

“Making sure your home is protected could be the difference between coming home to ashes, or some wet furniture,” said Joyce. “A home fire sprinkler could save you thousands, and more importantly, it could save the lives of your loved ones.”

Senate Resolution 96 was adopted by the Senate.
