SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Patrick Joyce highlighted a $263.5 million investment in state funding to support 12 projects that are delivering major improvements to Kankakee’s transportation infrastructure.
“It is great to see much needed projects being close to finished in Kankakee and surrounding areas,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “In the coming years, we will continue to see more improvements to the area through the Rebuild Illinois program, which shows our commitment to investing in infrastructure and residents in the state.”
These major projects cover all modes of transportation: roads, bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
Construction projects on U.S. 45/52 over Rock Creek west of Manteno and Illinois 115 in Kankakee were completed in July. Two ongoing projects that are expected to be completed this year will deliver improvements to Waldron Road over I-57 and Illinois 102 from the Will/Kankakee County line to U.S. 45/52 in Bourbonnais. By the end of next year, three construction projects will be completed on I-57 over Grinnell Road and railroad tracks north of Illinois 17, Armour Road over the Canadian National Railroad, and Illinois 50 at Armour Road in Bradley. The five remaining projects will begin in 2025, bringing road and bridge repairs to I-57 and the U.S. 45/52 interchange, I-57 at Manteno, Illinois 50 from Brookmont Boulevard to U.S. 45/52, Illinois 115 from Water Street to Jeffery Street, and I-57 at the Illinois 17 interchange.
Over six years, $33.2 billion in funding will be given to revitalize the state’s aging transportation system, a significant step towards rebuilding a safe and sustainable future for all communities. Currently, $12 billion in improvements have been made across the state, including 5,339 miles of highway, 533 bridges, and 762 safety developments.
