SPRINGFIELD – After calls for change from local communities, State Senator Patrick Joyce worked to pass a law that will expedite safety and infrastructure decisions at dangerous intersections on local state roads.
“When the safety decision process lacks efficiency, people get hurt,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “I am grateful to see this legislation signed into law, especially for the Will County residents who need it most.”
Senate Bill 3275 will require the Illinois Department of Transportation, in consultation with local agencies, to identify and conduct a road safety assessment of the 10 most hazardous state-controlled intersections in Will County located south of Interstate 80. The law will address delays faced by municipalities and counties in the 40th District when seeking IDOT review.
By requiring a formal safety review and report to the Illinois General Assembly, the law prioritizes potential fixes, such as design changes, traffic control adjustments or other safety measures, to reduce crashes and improve roadway safety in that region.
Joyce brought the legislation to Springfield after fatal crashes occurred in the district he represents. Residents and local leaders in the 40th District have called for solutions to getting the infrastructure changes needed to keep drivers safe in a timely manner.
Senate Bill 3275 was signed into law Friday and requires an assessment be submitted to the General Assembly by Jan. 1, 2028.
